Starting February 7 from 7pm to 8pm or so, Good Shepherd will begin a 14 week ministry at the Avalon Correctional Facility in downtown Tulsa. The ministry will be in the form of the teaching of a well known and accepted Christian workbook bible study,

Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby. This bible study which has been around for a long, long time is a "workbook" type study that teaches the attributes of getting to know God in all His glory and wonder on an individual basis. Prayer, bible study and individual written responses in the workbook are an integral part of the study. The value of this particular study for inmates in correctional facilities is the signing of a covenant at the beginning of the study that the student will faithfully attend the classes and do the homework and study materials thus injecting a sense of obedience and responsibility to the inmate to be a faithful and loyal student.

Ken Conlee taught this bible study at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in 1998 setting a precedent as the first organized bible study ever to be taught to a group in an Oklahoma correctional facility. Since then the study has been widely accepted throughout correctional facilities.

Anyone wishing to assist in the study is welcome. Just sign up in the church office that you wish to assist or notify Ken Conlee at 918/695-3392. You do not need special credentials to be in the Avalon unit as long as Ken is with you since he has security clearance to be in the unit. Ken will cover the do’s and don’ts while you are there such as no contraband, cell phones or cash on your person.

Avalon Correctional institute is a "halfway house." The offenders are primarily non-violent crime offenders. This means drug related crimes, unarmed robberies, petty theft, etc. But, they are still offenders and just because they are in Avalon as a non-violent offender doesn’t mean that in the past they were not guilty of violence. And as the warden says….don’t forget who they are….they are convicted criminals.

Workbooks were paid for by the church partially and by an individual donor. If you wish to donate to help offset the cost of the workbooks, please see the Pastor or Ken.

Individual Christian counseling and prayer will be offered to all attending inmates. Inmates will be invited to attend church at Good Shepherd as the occasion may present itself.
